I'm not opposed to being my own guinea pig. After all, someone paid for every medical study published on the internet. Because nearly identical studies, funded by different special interest groups, can have opposite findings, I prefer experimenting on myself and drawing my own conclusions. No control groups or anything fancy like that. I just want to (unscientifically) pop some supplements and see what happens... NOTES IN MY HAPPY PLANNER: DAY 1 - My goal is to see if three supplements (Berberine, Cinnamon, and White Mulberry Leaf Extract) used together would prevent sky-high blood glucose levels after eating a yummy, non-diabetic friendly. Initially, my results were disappointing. I didn't stop taking my regular daily supplements for the purpose of my little experiment. (*I already know that they have no effect on my numbers.) PLEASE SEE UPDATE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST. After fasting for more than 12 hours, I got a reading of 142. Not awesome. A few hours later came the fun part: I took my supplements and then, a few minutes later, I ate egg rolls with a packet of sweet and sour sauce. One hour later, the news wasn't good: My blood glucose shot up to 214. I waited another hour and poked myself again. The reading was a terrible 211. Was the problem my food choice, when I chose to take the supplements, or both? I decided to stick with the naughty food theme, but take the supplements an hour before I ate. Maybe they needed time to kick in before my meal??? I decided to take the supplements an hour before I planned to eat. I punished myself with another meal featuring egg rolls. This time, there was also rice involved! Too bad I don't know how to add a drum roll to your scrolling because 126 is MUCH better than I could have hoped! I am anxious to see what happens tomorrow when I don't abuse my body with a bunch of carbs my insulin resistant body can't handle. DAY 2 (A Day of Surprises) - Most days, my blood sugar levels are higher in the morning than they were the night before. This "rebound" issue is a topic for another day. Suffice it to say, I don't expect good great readings. 139 is not good, but I've experienced readings in 170's after fasting all night. So, 139 is a far cry from my worst. I decided to continue fasting, take Berberine, Cinnamon, and Mulberry Leaf Extract every 3 hours, and wait for my blood glucose readings to drop before eating something high fat, low carb. Imagine my surprise and confusion when, after 2 hours, my numbers were slightly higher... What was the problem??? Was yesterday a fluke??? Do the supplements NOT work to lower fasting levels??? I waited a little longer with little improvement. Indeed, eating some fat (sweetened with stevia) an hour after taking the supplement combination, appears to have lowered my blood glucose levels. 115 is a number I can live with. The question is can I repeat this experiment on myself and get similar results???? Also, what would happen if I add Apple Cider Vinegar to the mix???? *UPDATE! Although I am certain that the turmeric and other supplements that I take in the morning had no effect on my blood sugar levels, it seems that without my morning supplements, the mulberry leaf, berberine, and cinnamon don't perform nearly as well. For the past two days, I have simply taken mulberry leaf, berberine, and cinnamon one hour before eating. One hour after eating, my blood glucose ranged between 179-181 after eating a hard-boiled egg on keto bread. I expected much better results. I am afraid that I am doomed to swallow a fist full of pills to make this work.
